An Alternative to Lagoon and Stabilization Pond Dredging

BioRestore Sludge Divers® have proven effective at reducing the sludge volume in municipal wastewater lagoons. Results vary according to the sludge makeup and the initial volume.

Figures 1 and 2 are 3D representations of the sludge layer in a municipal lagoon. The figures show pre- and post trial plots at a municipal lagoon. The use of BioRestore Sludge Divers® resulted in a 38% reduction of sludge volume. The graphs were developed by mapping a
9 m x 40 m (30 ft. x 130 ft.) section of a lagoon that was treated. Each data point represents a 3 m x 3 m (0.9 ft. x 0.9 ft.) area. Measurements were taken before and 30 days after application.

High Levels of FOG

BioRestore FOG Removers® eliminate FOG-related problems. They are used in municipal and industrial wastewaters to improve plant efficiency, increase the FOG degradation capacity, decrease FOG removal costs, and decrease the presence of prevalent FOG filamentous
bacteria.

  • Excess untreated FOG can cause permit violations, decrease dewatering capabilities, promote growth of FOG filamentous bacteria which can cause foaming, and increase operating time and costs for skimming.
  • FOG is primarily composed of large water-insoluble triglyceride molecules. These triglycerides are made up of a glycerol and three fatty acids (most commonly palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids).
  • While many naturally occurring microorganisms have the ability to produce enzymes to cleave the fatty acids from the triglyceride, not many organisms have the ability to further break down these fatty acids.
  • As a result, BOD removal efficiency can decrease, pH can drop with acid build-up, and some
    fatty acids can become volatized as noxious odours.
